Concurrent Engineering is the latest buzzterm for bringing products to market faster. This paper explores how a distributed computing environment can enable concurrent engineering. The following topics are covered: • Definition of concurrent engineering and how it applies to non-technical as well as technical companies. • Case studies of companies who have harnessed their distributed computing environment to foster multi-departmental teamwork and thereby reduce design cycles. • Suggestions for overcoming organizational and technological barriers to concurrent engineering.
